Juventus midfielder Christian Poulsen is set to complete a £5.5 million move to Liverpool in the coming week, if his agent is to be believed. Roy Hodgson wants the Danish defensive midfielder as a replacement for Javier Mascherano who is expected to join former boss Rafael Benitez at Inter Milan. Poulsen has a history of playing under Hodgson. He was an integral part of the Copenhagen side which won the Danish Superliga nine years ago under the tutelage of Hodgson.
If the move is sealed, Poulsen will become Hodgson’s first signing in the true sense. Discussions with Jovanovic and Wilson had already begun during Benitez’s tenure and Joe Cole transferred on a free. Liverpool fans are a bit skeptical about Poulsen’s age and lack of pace. At 30, his best years may well be behind him. Yet Hodgson is known to get the best out of players who are in the twilight of their careers – Danny Murphy’s success at Fulham being a prime example.
