A well-known defensive crisis is hitting Liverpool at the moment, with three out of three senior centre-backs out injured. With Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez likely to miss the rest of the season and Joel Matip inconsistent in retaining his fitness, Klopp has decided to turn to the market, but only in the summer and they are targeting out-of-contract Bayern Munich’s David Alaba.
Due to coronavirus outbreak and the overall uncertainty, most clubs are sticking to their current players and opting out of expensive transfers, which is the reason why we will have many football stars becoming free agents in six months. David Alaba is one of those and he is determined to leave Bayern, after refusing their latest contract offer. It is believed that Real Madrid are also keen on signing the 28-year old Austrian.
His ability to play multiple positions in the field makes him one of the most versatile players in club football. Bayern had really utilized the Austrian captain, as he played as centre-back, left back, midfielder and even a winger for the Bavarian giants. Jürgen Klopp is famous for playing his players in different positions, so Alaba could fit in numerous places. He will be preferred in the back-line, probably partnering Virgil Van Dijk in the heart of the defense. According to reports in Liverpool, the Reds are ready to offer up to nine million a year for Alaba, making him one of the highest earners on Merseyside.
Liverpool have been linked with other centre-backs this transfer window, but Klopp has refused so far to comment on the transfers. A player of Alaba’s caliber would certainly fit for Klopp’s system and significantly improve his squad. However, he will face tough competition with Real Madrid for his signature, so we are in for a very exciting transfer window.
