After scoring 36 goals in 75 matches for Eintracht Frankfurt, the future was really bright for Luka Jović. He went on to sign for Real Madrid for 60 million euros, but failed to grab his place as the first striker and scored only two goals in 32 matches across all competitions. After another scoreless start of the season, Frankfurt came calling and it seems that Jović is off to spend the rest of the season on loan at his former club.
Despite being one of the most expensive players to arrive to Real Madrid in recent times, Jović was used almost sporadically, serving as backup for Karim Benzema. To be fair, Benzema was in top form the last three and a half seasons, going double digits in all of them. This season, despite being 33-years old, Benzema still is preferred as the first choice striker. Jović appeared in only four matches, failing to score a single goal in all competitions.
He never quite managed to reach the heights from 2018/2019 season, when he was one of the most promising young strikers in the world at Frankfurt. Manager Fredi Bobic has already commented that a deal is close to be completed, pending a medical. Zinedine Zidane has not commented on the matter, but it is almost certain that Real Madrid will aim to cash-in for the Serbian striker in the summer.
If he opts for a permanent transfer at the end of the season, Luka Jović will join the list of one of the most disastrous transfer for Los Blancos. Previously, Woodgate, Gravesen, Elvir Baljić, Kaka and most recently maybe even Eden Hazard failed to live up to high expectations at Bernabeu, despite arriving on high-profile transfers. However, this is only a loan move so the future will tell.
