Newcastle have officially confirmed the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from French club Olympique Lyonnais. The Brazilian international has switched clubs for a fee of approximately 50 million euros (including 8m euros in bonuses), with a 20% future sale clause also reportedly incorporated into the deal.
Guimaraes becomes Newcastle’s third signing of the winter window after Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood. He has put pen to paper a four-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at Tyneside till the summer of 2026.
The 24-year-old Bruno joined Lyon from Athletico Paranaense back in 2020 for a reported 20-million-euro fee + a 20% future sale clause. He has been capped by the Brazilian national team and was also part of their Olympic winning squad. He made 71 appearances across all competitions for OL during his stint at Parc des Princes.
Newcastle are third from bottom in the league currently and their next league fixture is a home one against Everton. With Watford and Burnley both having games in hand, it becomes imperative for Eddie Howe’s side to pick up as many points as possible if they’re to stay up this season.
Lyon have been hit hard economically by the Covid pandemic and are a lowly 11th in Ligue 1 at the time of writing.
