Newcastle United have officially confirmed the signing of keeper Lorius Karius on a short-term deal. The German shot stopper was a free agent after leaving Liverpool in June and the Magpies have brought him in as a replacement for Karl Darlow, who picked up a ligament injury recently.
Karius’ deal is only till January and he will be second choice at St.James behind Nick Pope. Newcastle were short on goalkeeping cover after Darlow’s injury, with Martin Dubravka having also been sent on loan to Manchester United. Dubravka’s deal does have a recall clause, but that cannot be activated until January, forcing Eddie Howe to look for alternate options.
Karius has never quite recovered from the twin blunders he made in goal during the 2018 Champions League final, although reports later suggested that he was playing with concussion. Since then, he has had loan stints at both Besiktas in Turkey and Union Berlin in his native Germany, albeit with mixed success.
The 29-year-old has been capped by Germany at various youth levels, but never at senior level. Newcastle are 11th in the Premier League currently, having picked up 7 points from 6 games so far. They are supposed to host Howe’s former club- Bournemouth, in the next round of fixtures.
