According to reports, Man City and Barcelona are set to battle it out for the services of rising Dutch star Frenkie de Jong in January.
The 21 year old Ajax midfielder has turned in a number of eye catching performances for both club and country, and is viewed by pundits as a player who could potentially become world class in the next year or two.
De Jong was a key part of the Netherlands’ 2-0 win over world champions France earlier this month, a victory that helped the Dutch qualify for the Nations League semifinals at the expense of both Les Bleus and Joachim Low’s Germany.
A potential 75 million pound fee has been touted, but Ajax are keen to hold on to De Jong as well as his teammate Matthijs de Ligt, who has also attracted attention from several European heavyweights. If the two parties can agree on a fee, De Jong could potentially become Man City’s record signing, a position currently held by Riyad Mahrez.
If Barcelona cannot get De Jong to move to the Nou Camp, they may go for French youngster Tanguy Ndombele, who currently plies his trade for Olympique Lyonnais.
