The transfer window is now shut, and Manchester United have done little trading over the summer, sneaking Marouane Fellaini in at the last minute after only one other move with the 20-year-old Uruguayan full-back Guillermo Varela joining the team also.
There was rumours over the summer that there may be overtures to try and lure high profile players Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas but these came to nothing after all, perhaps offers even been rejected for the team who have struggled to make fans remain confident after the retirement of Manchester United stalwart manager Alex Ferguson and the takeover by new chief executive Ed Woodward. This was a shame as there was much effort to get Ronaldo back from Real Madrid and Fabregas was rumoured by many to be looking for a way out of Barcelona with the top team Manchester United in his sights.
There was talk way back of unlimited budgets from Woodward for David Moyes to get the team he really wanted, but these came to nothing over the window after paying over the odds for Fellaini.
The departure of Alex Ferguson and former chief executive David Gill has led speculators to consider that for the first time, Manchester United may be looking at a season where they don’t finish the season in the top four. Woodward has met with much derision in the press following the transfer window disaster, with people calling him out for his naivety and inexperience, where as Moyes is under great pressure following his previous role managing Everton, with Manchester United a much more imposing chore on his shoulders. Moyes was also already under pressure from his contract with Everton not expiring until June 30th, meaning he was unable to speak to Manchester United’s chief scout until July.
However, there was some success over the summer, with the successful retention of top player Rooney. You can keep an eye on the odds and place your bets on United at Betfair Football.
Many United fans are angry with the way the summer went for the team and all eyes are trained on Moyes as he tries to both placate the fans and get the best from his inherited players. Only time will tell of the move will be good for him. Will fans allow him some slack if he doesn’t bring home the bacon this season? Is United looking at a few years getting to grips with life after Ferguson on can the team keep it together?
