After an emphatic 4-2 win over in-form Watford at Vicarage Road on Tuesday, Manchester United are looking to bolster their defense lines in the coming winter transfer window. And they are looking at Jose Gimenenz, the Athletico Madrid defender. Jose Mourinho, Head Coach for the Red Devils, have been keeping tabs on the 22-year old Uruguay international for some time now. Reports have it that the player too would be happy to make the switch.
This audacious move, according to Sports Mole journalist Bob Corkhill, would require United paying the buyout clause of the defender’s current contract which is valued at about £60 million. The star defender had recently put pen to paper for a new contract but is behind Diego Godin and Stefan Savic in Diego Simone’s team. He has only started just 6 matches across all competitions so far.
Athletico Madrid may listen to offers that are below the player’s buyout clause just to offload the defender. Manchester united are not the only suitor interested in the services of the young defender and may face a stiff competition from Serie A giants Juventus. Juve who are third on the Serie A table, are 4 points adrift of league leaders Napoli and consider Gimenez a suitable replacement for Bonnuci who joined AC Milan last summer.
Gimenez’s huge talent is one that cannot be ignored. He has 37 international caps for his native Uruguay under his belt so far. He has scored a goal and contributed an assist in his 10 appearances for Athletico Madrid. Not a bad stats for a defender if you ask me.
Jose Gimenez joined Athletico Madrid in 2013 from his home club Danubio for about €900,000. He has since gone on to make about 107 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side scoring a total of 5 goals in the process. He has only started 4 matches this season and Man United are keen on taking him to Old Trafford.
