Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly mulling over a shock summer swoop for Frank Lampard. Chelsea stalwart Lampard’s contract expires at the end of the 2012/13 season and his agent has already said that the Blues are not to be interested in giving his client an extension. Ferguson, a long term admirer of Lampard, views him as a possible stop gap arrangement in the United midfield for the 2013/14 season given the impending retirement of Paul Scholes.
Lampard reportedly has offers abroad, with the United States and China both being touted as likely destinations. Chelsea would prefer him to go abroad than sell him to a direct league rival.
Ferguson tried to sign Lampard as a youngster when he was with West Ham, but he eventually went to Chelsea.
