Manchester United have completed the signing of highly rated youngster Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers. United triggered off the young centre half’s £16m release clause to beat off competition from Liverpool and Arsenal for Jones’ services. Jones is the latest addition to United’s list of young defenders which currently includes Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans as cover for the first choice pairing of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
Jones is a versatile defender who can also operate in midfield. United swooped early for the defender after being beaten by rivals Liverpool to the signing of Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson.
Blackburn made a last ditch attempt to pursue Jones to stay at the club by offering him an improved £65,000 a week page, but the latter rejected it in order to move to Champions League finalists United.
