Liverpool’s Argentine holding midfielder Javier Mascherano has welcomed interest from Spanish giants Barcelona. Barcelona are eyeing Mascherano to play at defensive midfield, after contract talks have stalled with current defensive midfielder Yaya Toure.
Mascherano debuted in the English league with West Ham. After a lot of mess involving third party ownership and unethical deal-making, Mascherano finally signed for the Anfield giants from West Ham. Mascherano has played 59 games for Liverpool scoring only a solitary goal.
Liverpool have recorded massive losses and may need to sell to finance new purchases. Xabi Alonso, Mascherano’s midfield partner is also subject to bids from Manchester City and Real Madrid. It would be highly unlikely on Liverpool’s part to allow both of them to leave Anfield.
Javier’s agent Walter Tamer was positive that the move could materialise if Barcelona showed concrete interest. He was quoted in the media as saying –
It is an honour for Javier that a club like Barca pay such close attention to him, especially after the incredible season they had. I believe that a transfer would be feasible. If Barca really want him, he will sign for them. If a club like Barcelona want to bring you into their ranks after completing such a brilliant season winning everything, obviously as a player you are going to say “Yes, I want to play there”.
