Promising Newcastle United youngster Matty Longstaff has officially sealed his switch to Major League Soccer by signing for Toronto FC. The midfielder has inked a two-year contract with the Canadian club (till 2026) with the option for a further year built into the deal.
Longstaff is best remembered for his spectacular Premier League debut, when his goal gave the Magpies a 1-0 win over Manchester United back in 2019. However, he didn’t quite progress as well as expected, and was shipped off to Aberdeen for a loan spell, but played only five games for the SPFL outfit before being recalled to Tyneside.
Lack of opportunities at both Championship and League One clubs meant that he had to drop down to League Two, with loan spells at fourth division clubs Mansfield Town and Colchester United.
At Colchester, he picked up a cruciate ligament injury and hasn’t played a game of senior football since. He was eventually released by Newcastle at the end of the 23/24 season, but his brother Sean remains a NUFC regular.
Toronto finished last in the overall MLS standings last season. Their next game this season will see them square off against New England Revolution
