Australian international Lucas Neill is set to sign for Everton on a free transfer. The 31 year-old left West Ham earlier this summer after being unable to agree new contract terms. The former Hammers captain is set to arrive on Merseyside to have a medical.
He has already been linked with a move to Sunderland and even a return to London with former club West Ham. However he has so far been unable to secure his next move. He is a experienced defender in the Premier League and in international football with the Socceroos. Neill now looks set to link up with Aussie international teammate Tim Cahill on Merseyside with Everton.
Everton are in need of defensive reinforcements after losing England international Joleon Lescott to Manchester City. They signed defenders Johnny Heitinga and Sylvain Distin after selling Lescott but are still light in defence.
The Everton boss David Moyes is currently without centre-back Phil Jagielka and suffered the more recent blow of losing captain Phil Neville in the Toffee’s last game. The former Manchester United star had also appeared at right-back this season.
Neill could prove a useful addition to the squad as he can play at centre-back and right-back and will also provide leadership skills, which at times have appeared to be missing from the current Everton squad.
