Newcastle United are set to sign Manchester United defender Danny Simpson on a permanent basis. The 23 year old Simpson who has made only three appearances for the Red Devils in his career has been on loan at St. James’ Park from the start of the season. He has played 20 games for Chris Hughton’s side scoring once. Simpson will sign a two and a half year deal with the Magpies provided he clears the medical at Newcastle. The fee is reportedly around £500,000.
Simpson becomes Newcastle’s first signing of the winter window. After missing out on Leeds’ starlet Jermaine Beckford, they have turned their attention towards Aston Villa forward Marlon Harewood. Harewood has been on loan at Newcastle and has scored five times in fifteen games and Hughton is hoping to turn his loan deal into a permanent one.
The Magpies are also tracking Scunthorpe United midfielder Michael O’Connor, Rosenborg star Per Ciljan Skjelbred and Portsmouth defender Mike Williamson. Nolberto Solano may return to Newcastle for his third spell at the club at the age of 35. The Peruvian has been training with the club for the last few days and hopes to earn a short-term contract. The club’s fitness men are reportedly very impressed by his performance in training and he might be offered another bite at the cherry at Newcastle United.
Chris Hughton has also been very quick to rubbish rumours about Andy Carroll leaving the club. Owen Coyle was preparing to launch a £2million bid for the striker but Hughton has made it clear that he is not for sale.
