Football players in this day and age are straight commodities. Your hometown hero this season could catch the twenty-million-pound bus next and leave you bitter and jaded. It’s always fun to watch your favorite footy star while he’s suited up for your squad.
Players are transferred today like it’s the London Stock Exchange, and Real Madrid’s French forward Karim Benzema certainly doesn’t appear to be an exception to the rule.
No stranger to the transfer game, Manchester United is currently in negotiations that would hopefully send Karim, along with Valencia’s David Silva, to the team. So far, the news is only on the rumor mill, but United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is attempting to shore-up funding for the acquirement by sweet-talking American owner Malcolm Irving Glazer out of 60 million.
Glazer, who also owns the American NFL franchise the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, certainly has the funding available to sign Real Madrid’s ultra-talented forward to a lucrative deal – and gain a solid utility player in the process on the cheap. But whether or not Ferguson will receive funding for his selected stock remains to be seen.
Some speculate that, instead of Glazer parting with such a sweet chunk of change, he will instead pinch his pennies and force Ferguson to make lemonade from lemons by acquiring lesser players.
Benzema and Silva both would be welcomed additions to Manchester, but only time will tell if the deal can be made.
