Nottingham Forest have loaned out record signing Joao Carvalho to Almeria till the end of the 20/21 season. The former Portugal U21 international was Forest’s record signing when they shelled out £13.2m for him two seasons ago, but doesn’t appear to be in coach Sabri Lamouchi’s future plans and will now play the rest of the season in the Spanish Segunda Division with Almeria.
Almeria narrowly missed out on promotion last season as they finished fourth and lost in their playoff semifinal to Girona.
Carvalho has not featured in any of Forest’s three league games so far (defeats to QPR, Cardiff and Huddersfield). His only appearance for the club in 20/21 was in the EFL Cup against Barnsley, where he played for an hour before being replaced by Lyle Taylor as Forest lost 1-0 and exited the competition.
In his first season at the City Ground, Carvalho made 40 appearances across all competitions, a figure that dropped to 26 in the next 19/20 season. He is contracted to Forest till the end of the 2022/23 season, having inked a five-year deal when he originally moved from Benfica in 2018.
Carvalho’s loan follows that of fellow midfielder Brennan Johnson, who moved to Lincoln City a few days ago.
