Premier League champions Liverpool have officially announced that Nathaniel Clyne will be leaving the club at the end of his current contract. Clyne’s current deal runs out on June 30 and the Reds have opted to release him along with seven academy players- Dan Atherton, Isaac Christie-Davies, Shamal George, Kai McKenzie-Lyle, Jack Walls, Alex Turner and Abel Rodrigues.
Clyne joined Liverpool from Southampton in the summer of 2015 and was an integral part of their squad during his first two seasons at Anfield. He made 52 appearances across all competitions in the 2015/16 season and 41 in the 2016/17 one, but injuries have been a recurrent problem for him in his last three years at the club. He has made only 10 appearances for the Reds in that period and none in the current 2019/20 campaign, and also had a brief stint on loan at Bournemouth.
With Trent-Alexander Arnold having established himself as the club’s first choice right-back and young Neco Williams also showing great promise, Liverpool have opted to let Clyne go.
Clyne has earned 14 caps for England and was part of their Euro 2016 squad. His next destination is unclear, but if he can prove his fitness, there will be no dearth of suitors domestically, with his defensive acumen making him a strategic buy for several mid table clubs.
