Roma sign Mkhitaryan

Italian giants Roma have moved to sign yet another player from the Premier League after announcing the acquisition of Henrikh Mkhitaryan on loan from Arsenal till the end of the season. The Gunners will be paid a loan fee of 3 million euros, with the capital outfit also covering the Armenian’s wages.

The Giallorossi had earlier strengthened their defence with the signings of Davide Zappacosta (on loan from Chelsea) and Chris Smalling from Manchester United (permanent deal, also for 3 million euros). Mkhitaryan is the latest in a number of high-profile players to move from the Premier League to Serie A this summer, with the Man Utd duo of Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku also having joined Inter.

The Armenian medio’s last Gunners appearance was off the bench against Spurs in the North London derby on Sunday that ended in a 2-2 draw. Roma also signed Croatian forward Nikola Kalinic from Atletico Madrid on a season long loan, an option to make the deal permanent for 11 million euros.

Paulo Fonseca’s men are yet to pick up a win in Serie A this season, having drawn 3-3 with Genoa and Lazio respectively in their opening two games. The twin draws have left them 15th in the table going into the international break.
