As mentioned here a few days ago, Paraguay international Roque Santa Cruz has signed a four year contract with Mancheser City after passing a thorough medical examination which lasted over five hours. The 27 year old striker, who was voted the sexiest player of the 2006 World Cup becomes City’s second signing of the transfer window after Gareth Barry. Manchester City have reported paid $25 million up front for his services with another $4 million depending on appearances and performance.
Manchester City boss Mark Hughes has worked with Santa Cruz at Blackburn previously where he enjoyed the most successful season of his career, scoring 23 goals in 43 games. After that sensational debut season in England, Roque’s form has tapered away due to recurrent injuries. He managed only 6 goals last season and missed more than half of Blackburn’s Premier League campaign.
“The owners want the club to be more successful. They want to break into the top four, and the fact that the fans are so passionate about everything to do with City was also a factor. I am very motivated to play for these fans.”
“I know the kind of football Mark Hughes wants to play and the kind of character he is – he’s a winner, he wants to make things happen and be successful.
“Those are always my thoughts as well, so knowing what he wants was a big factor in coming here, because I know the club is going in the right direction.”
Hughes also was fairly satisfied with his most recent acquisition in the transfer market.
“His ability in the air and his physical presence are qualities we’ve been missing, but he also has technical ability and good pace for a big man.”
“He’s a very good player and one I know well from our time at Blackburn.”
City now turn their attention to other targets such as Lescott, Toure, Tevez and Eto’o.
