German Bundesliga outfit Schalke have completed the signing of young French defender Jean-Clair Todibo on loan from Barcelona. The Royal Blues will pay the Blaugrana a loan fee of 1.5 million euros and also have the option to make the deal permanent for 25m euros (plus 5m euros in add-ons) at the end of the current campaign.
The 20-year-old joined Barca from Toulouse in January last year but failed to secure a regular starting spot at the Nou Camp. He has made only three appearances for the Catalan giants so far this season- two in the league against Getafe & Sevilla and one in their final Champions League group game against Inter Milan.
S04 head coach David Wagner has said that while Todibo is primarily a central defender, they may also play him in midfield should the need arise.
Todibo is Schalke’s second loan signing of the winter window after Michael Gregoritsch. The club are currently fifth in the Bundesliga table, seven points behind leaders Leipzig and will face Borussia Monchengladbach this weekend at the Veltins Arena.
Todibo has been capped by France at U20 level. Should Schalke exercise the option to purchase him, Barca will have the option of buying him back at a later date (50m euros +10m in addons)
