Reports have emerged this week about the prospect of title favourites Manchester City making a bid for Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna.
Sagna’s form has been excellent this season, but perhaps more significantly he has been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers since his move from Auxerre in 2007, racking up almost 200 appearances in the period since.
Given Arsenal’s impressive form this season, City might be the only club in England who could claim to represent a step-up for the Frenchman, but should the move go ahead it is difficult to see how City would choose between Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta – himself one of the division’s most consistent performers – as their first choice right-back.
Zabaleta has continued to impress throughout his six years in Manchester, and has held down a starting berth despite his side’s capacity to buy almost any player they want. Huge credit should go to the Argentine for how he has embraced the revolution at the Etihad and proved to be so integral in City’s success.
The move, thus, doesn’t seem a particularly beneficial one for either player and certainly not for Arsenal. City will gain depth in a notoriously tricky position to find World Class players, whilst simultaneously weakening one of their main rivals for the Premier League title this season.
