As we previously stated there will be a host of free agents this summer and numerous clubs are working tirelessly to secure their signature before the transfer window closes. Most of them are due to join in the summer when their contract expires. So Barcelona have apparently snapped up Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum and Real Madrid is on course to secure the signature of David Alaba, with a reported 12 million a year salary. Another top defender that has his contract expire in the summer is Sergio Ramos, who might be moving to the French capital.
A Real Madrid captain and a true icon of the club, Sergio Rams has redefined the position of a central defender, by becoming one of the very few defenders to score 100 goals for his club. Signed from Sevilla back in 2005, Sergi Ramos amazed more than 460 appearances for Real Madrid. In 2015 he also became club captain and helped them win the Champions league three times in a row. Although his style and attitude might not impress everyone as he is one of the most hated player in the world of football, Sergio Ramos can be given credit as one of the most complete defenders in this millennium.
However, it seems that he will seek for pastures new this coming summer, as no agreement has been reached for a new Real Madrid contract. Paris Saint Germain is actively looking for a centre back to replace Thiago Silva who joined Chelsea last summer. A huge paycheck and a longer contract should be enough to persuade the 34-year old for the switch. There it would be interesting to see his relationship with his former rival from Barcelona, Neymar Jr.
At 34. Ramos is entering the twilight of his career and he is still way to good to be looking for an MLS or China transfer. It seems that we will most likely watch him play yet another season in a top European club and whether that club is revealed in January, is yet to be seen.
