According to media reports, North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are both said to be interested in German defender Matthias Ginter. The 25 year old, who currently plays for Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach, is a reported transfer target for the summer.
Both Arsenal and Spurs have had issues with defensive depth this season. Shkodran Mustafi hasn’t been at his best and with others like Rob Holding out injured, Unai Emery has sometimes been forced to turn to Granit Xhaka, a midfielder by trade, to do a job at the back.
Spurs have triggered contract extensions for both of their key Belgian stalwarts- Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, although the former, a rumoured target for Man Utd, can now leave for £25m in the summer.
Ginter, who has 23 caps for Germany, joined Gladbach from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017. He is contracted to them till the end of the 2020/21 season.
Gladbach are currently second in the Bundesliga, and Ginter’s form has been a key component of their success. With him in the XI, they have lost only 2 in 15 games, and they suffered as many defeats in the five league games he missed through injury.
