Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly opened contract talks with Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen. The 32-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the 2019/20 season and the Lilywhites are keen to tie him down after managing to get veteran midfielder Moussa Sissoko to agree to a new four year contract last month.
Spurs have had a poor start to the new season, with Vertonghen left out of the starting XI in several games, and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by Colchester. Their Champions League campaign also started on a shaky note, with Greek side Olympiacos coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Poch’s men in their group opener. There’s been talk of fresh blood being required at the North London outfit, with pundits and fans suggesting that several players aren’t fully committed to the club.
Despite being reduced to ten men against Southampton, Spurs managed to produce a 2-1 win over the weekend and are currently sixth in the table, but below the likes of West Ham and Leicester.
Fellow defender Toby Alderweireld is also out of contract next summer, but rumours have Man Utd making an offer for him in January, especially with Eric Bailly now out for an extended period and Chris Smalling leaving on loan to Roma.
