Harry Redknapp has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing former England captain David Beckham on a six-month loan deal. Redknapp believes that David’s experience of handling big-match situations would help the club and the players challenge for honours in domestic as well as European competitions. Beckham’s camp has been making all the right noises and have not ruled out a move to White Hart Lane.
The MLS season begins in mid-March and David would benefit playing for the three-odd months leading into the season, rather than relaxing in his plush house in Los Angeles. A stint with a Premier League club will also put him right into Capello’s England plans. Beckham moved to the LA Galaxy in 2008 and has made 48 appearances for the California based side, scoring 9 times. In the meanwhile, Beckham also played 29 games for AC Milan during his two loan-stints with the Italian club.
Harry Redknapp insisted that the move had no ulterior financial motives and that David would not be at the Lane to increase merchandising revenues. “He’s been a fantastic player and someone the players would look up to and respect. He can do a job for sure. If he’s over his injury and is as fit as he thinks, then he could still play at the top level. He wouldn’t be coming here just to sell shirts. In the short term, he’s not going to sell a load of shirts. He could buy any football club in this country if he wanted to. He is not going to do it for the money is he? That tells you everything about him,” said Redknapp.
