Struggling German outfit VfB Stuttgart have sacked Bruno Labbadia and appointed former youth player Sebastian Hoeness as his replacement. Labbadia was shown the door after a 3-0 loss to Union Berlin on the weekend, leaving Stuttgart at the bottom of the Bundesliga table with eight games to play.
Labbadia had been appointed only in December but Stuttgart only won two games in his 12-match tenure- once in the German Cup against Paderborn and the other in the league against FC Koln. Before Labbadia, the Swabians were managed by American Pellegrino Matarazzo.
Stuttgart’s first game under Hoeness, the son of former German international Dieter and the nephew of former Bayern president Uli, will be a Cup clash against Nuremberg. His first Bundesliga assignment will come in the form of an away trip to Bochum this weekend.
The 40-year-old Hoeness was previously in charge of TSG Hoffenheim, managing them for the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons. He had a three year contract that was terminated at the end of the second season as Hoffenheim finished a lowly 9th in the league.
Hoeness’ new deal at Stuttgart runs till the end of the 2024/25 season and is also expected to see him manage the club in the second division should they not be able to avoid relegation this season.
