With Ipswich town and Manchester City vying for the signature of Marton Fulop, Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is contemplating making a short term bid for England goalkeeper David James. Sunderland’s no.1 custodian Craig Gordon has been sidelined with a broken arm and is likely to miss a major portion of the season. In his absence, Bruce is looking for James to keep things tight at the back.
Celtic and Fulham have also expressed their interest to sign the eccentric keeper. Celtic may be willing to offer a 2-year deal to the 39-year old while a move to Fulham might be more appealing. With Mark Schwarzer likely to move to Arsenal, the top spot at Craven Cottage would be James’ for the taking. The move to Fulham could well depend on whom they appoint as their new manager after Jol turned them down to stay with Ajax.
Fulop has not yet quit the Black Cats. Ipswich and West Brom have both made bids in the range of £1.5 million and the Hungarian keeper might well move to secure first team football. Meanwhile, Sunderland’s latest recruit Titus Bramble has joined his team-mates in their pre-season tour of Portugal.
