Sunderland have confirmed that Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has been loaned to UAE club Al Ain. The African forward will spend the rest of the 2011/12 season in the United Arab Emirates. The news of the departure has come as a shock to several fans, especially as Gyan had established himself as a fans’ favourite following his performances for the Black Cats last season.
Manager Steve Bruce said that Gyan had not been himself in recent months and said that the loan deal suited all parties in question.
In the absence of Gyan, the main burden of scoring at the Stadium of Light is expected to fall on Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner, who joined the Black Cats on loan from Arsenal on transfer deadline day.
