Sunderland have completed the signing of Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole for £6million plus extras depending appearances and the England Under-21 international has signed a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light. The north-east side have been chasing Cattermole all summer and have now finally got their man.
The 21-year completed his medical on Wearside earlier today and will now join up with his new teammates for the start of the Premier League season this weekend. The former Middlesbrough ace had also been linked with a move to Liverpool earlier in the summer, but a move failed to materialise.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez had revealed earlier on today that he didn’t wish to sell the midfielder, but apparently had a change of heart later on in the day. It leaves the Latic’s boss little time to replace Cattermole.
Meanwhile the Latics chief has revealed that he is close to signing Rayo Vallecano pair Antonio Amaya and Mohamed Diame. Wigan are prepared to offer the duo three-year contracts at the DW Stadium. Amaya is a defender and Diame is a midfielder and both are highly rated by the Spaniard.
Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post:”We are quite close to agreeing everything, and the main thing now is thrashing out the personal terms.
“I’ve followed their progress and development for a long time, and they will bring something different to our squad.
“I’m happy with the way the squad is developing, there’s a tremendous work ethic and a fantastic spirit in the camp.
“I’m very excited about the challenge ahead and the players are very focused and ready for that challenge.
“I’ve got huge confidence in the quality of the squad, we have a good core of players and we are getting stronger every day.”
