Swansea City have officially confirmed the signing of midfielder Jonathan de Guzman on a season long loan from Villarreal CF. The move reunites the 24 year old De Guzman with new Swans boss Michael Laudrup, who worked with the former during his stint at Mallorca, and makes him the Dane’s second signing of the current summer transfer window after Genoa’s Jose Manuel Flores.
De Guzman was born in Canada, but gained Dutch citizenship after playing for Feyenoord Rotterdam between 2005 and 2010. He has represented Holland at U-21 level and also played for the country at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but is yet to receive a senior international cap, thus still making him eligible to play for Canada alongside his elder brother Julian.
De Guzman moved to Villarreal only last summer for a reported €8.5m fee.
