Manchester United have officially confirmed their first signing of the summer window in the form of rising Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia. The 22-year-old has joined the Red Devils on a four-year contract (with the option of an additional year’s extension built into the deal). The transfer fee wasn’t officially announced, but is believed to be an initial £13m, with a further £1.7m in add-ons.
Malacia originally looked set to join French club Olympique Lyonnais, only for United to make a late move for him. He is also Erik Ten Hag’s first signing at Old Trafford and is expected to compete with Luke Shaw for the starting LB role at the club. Malacia’s signing also paves the way for Alex Telles’ departure, with reports suggesting that Brandon Williams may also be allowed to leave.
Malacia is a Feyenoord youth product and has been at the club since 2008. He made over 130 senior appearances across all competitions for the Rotterdam based side. The 22-year-old has also been capped at various youth levels by the Netherlands and made his first senior appearance for the Oranje last September.
Feyenoord finished 3rd in the Eredivisie last season and also reached the Conference League final, where they lost to Roma.
