Manchester United have today officially confirmed the signing of youngster Daniel James from Swansea City. The 21-year-old thus becomes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing as Red Devils boss. The Welsh international has moved for a reported fee of £15m, potentially rising to £18m, and has inked a five year deal at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer’s United finished 6th in the Premier League last season and finished trophyless after early exits from the League Cup, Champions League and FA Cup. The Norwegian is looking at an overhaul of his squad, with several players like Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez expected to leave the club this summer.
Few would expect James to become a first team regular in the upcoming season- after all, he’s effectively been signed after one decent Championship season. It’s perhaps more of a long term acquisition, but Solskjaer has obviously seen enough to decide that he could command a spot in the first XI sooner rather than later.
James made 38 appearances for the Swans last season and managed five goals and 10 assists across all competitions. He also made his international bow for Wales in November last year. Swansea finished 10th in the Championship last season- nine points off a playoff spot.
