Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is considering a £7million move for Fulham defender Chris Smalling. The Gunners boss is in need of central defensive cover, as he looks to unload Switzerland international Philippe Senderos to the highest bidder. Wenger has also re-signed the experienced Sol Campbell as backup but knows that he needs to increase the number of central defenders in his squad.
Smalling made his Premier League debut against Chelsea last month after making regular appearances in the Europa League. And the young defender has impressed since arriving from non-league Maidstone. His potential has been spotted by Wenger and his scouting team and he could now make a move for the 20 year-old.
Smalling could also appear in the Champions League, if needed as his previously mentioned appearances in the Europa League do not have an effect on appearing in Europe’s elite competition. He would act as cover for William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen and could become the future of the Arsenal defence.
The Gunners boss is prepared to offer some fringe players in exchange for the defender but the straight cash deal is likely to appeal more to the Cottagers. It would represent a really good profit on the youngster, who is not even a regular in their side yet.
