Premier League Wigan are in talks to sign Chile international defender Waldo Ponce. Ponce is just the latest Wigan target from South and Central America. The Lancashire club have already signed the likes of Wilson Palacios, Antonio Valencia, Hugo Rodallega and Maynor Figueroa from that part of the world and manager Roberto Martinez is hoping to add Ponce’s name to that list.
Ponce currently plays for Argentinian side Velez Sarsfield, but his contract at the club is due to expire. Ponce’s British representative Barry McIntosh has revealed that the player is ready to fly to England. However he wouldn’t confirm that the player is set to sign for the Latics.
McIntosh told Skysports.com: “There are a number of interested clubs in Waldo. His style would suit England and we are hopeful he will fly in this week for talks.”
Ponce had a previous short spell in Germany with Wolfsburg. He has now confirmed he was mulling over a move back to Europe.
“Maybe this is the moment to leave Velez,” said Ponce.
“The officials have approached me about having a conversation over renewing my contract but there are too many things to be resolved, financial, family and sporting details. I am going through the best moment of my career. I had a very good year. I won a title with Velez, got qualification for the World Cup with Chile.
“Now what is left in my career is to play in Europe, I am now 27-years-old so I think that this is the right moment for moving.”
