Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that the Latics are interested in signing Man City winger Shaun Wright Phillips. The England international is widely expected to leave Eastlands this summer after failing to nail down a starting spot at City. Bolton Wanderers looked to be his most likely destination after Zat Knight told media reporters that SWP wanted to come to the Reebok, but it now seems that the Trotters will have competition from Lancashire rivals Wigan.
Whelan admitted that Latics boss Roberto Martinez was a big fan of Wright Phillips and would love to bring him to the DW Stadium. According to sources, the winger could be allowed to leave City for as little as £3m, thus making him a very attractive transfer proposition.
