17-year-old Luke Matheson signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers on transfer deadline day in a deal rumoured to be around the £1-million mark. Matheson has been in superb form all season and has risen to national attention following a high-profile goal against Manchester United.
It came in a 1-1 draw in a third-round Carabao Cup clash at Old Trafford. The goal was the cue for absolute delirium in the away end and indeed on the pitch with Matheson scarcely able to believe what he had just done.
It was far from out of the blue, however. Matheson has been on the radar of the top clubs in England for well over a year after becoming the youngest player in Rochdale’s history when he came on as a sub in a League One tie aged 15 years and 336 days.
Earlier this year, Matheson was in the headlines again after assisting Rochdale’s equaliser in their FA Cup match against Premier League Newcastle United. For reasons like these, Matheson has quickly become a fan favourite at Spotland Stadium. Therefore, the Rochdale fans will be grateful that the full-back will not be leaving just yet – he is being loaned back to the club for the remainder of the season.
It’s quite possible that Matheson could be playing European football next season as Wolves are knocking on the door of the top six in the Premier League for a second successive season. If Matheson is to get in the first team, however, he will have to displace the impressive Matt Doherty who has started nearly all of Wolves’ games over the past two Premier League seasons.
